KANSASWORKS Staff Development for On-the-Job Training Programs

Increasingly, employers are seeking workforce training that taps new talent pools and accelerates skill development. Likewise, job seekers prefer hands-on, workplace-based training over classroom learning. On-the-job training (OJT) is a form of work-based learning that meets both needs by rapidly building job-specific skills.
The Kansas Department of Commerce identified an opportunity to expand the use of OJT, a valuable tool for both businesses and job seekers, throughout its statewide workforce development system, KANSASWORKS.
KANSASWORKS and AIR Develop OJT Training
Kansas Commerce engaged AIR to develop and deliver comprehensive training on OJT program design and implementation for KANSASWORKS system staff.

For this project, AIR:
- Developed and fielded a staff training needs assessment survey, the results of which indicated a strong need for and interest in the training among KANSASWORKS staff.
- Developed and facilitated a 1.5-day, interactive, in-person training. Training delivery followed the OJT customer journey for employers, job seekers/employees, and KANSASWORKS staff and featured a comprehensive workbook for training participants that included several OJT templates and resources for staff use.
- Designed and delivered a companion online training module for ongoing staff onboarding and development.
- Implemented a robust training evaluation framework to assess immediate and longer-term training perceptions, application, and impacts.
- Provided Kansas Commerce leaders with action planning resources and technical assistance to support continued momentum and progress on OJT expansion statewide.
