Facilitating Convenings for District Leaders to Improve Student Outcomes in California
In response to legislative mandates and to improve student math and literacy scores statewide, the California superintendent enacted the Move the Needle Initiative. The Move the Needle Initiative aims to increase student achievement through systems-level change and professional learning opportunities for district leaders.
The California Department of Education (CDE) is collaborating with the West Comprehensive Center to organize and facilitate convenings for district leaders. These convenings will focus on professional learning and implementation support aimed at improving student achievement in literacy and mathematics.
West CC will support the CDE by:
- Coordinating subject matter experts to provide professional learning at Move the Needle convenings;
- Supporting ongoing communication with Move the Needle cohort members by providing relevant research and resources;
- Assisting in monitoring initiative progress by conducting triannual reviews of quantitative and qualitative data; and
- Preparing reports to inform decision making and support continuous improvement.
Through these collaborative efforts, the CDE will have enhanced capacity to engage effectively in policy and technical assistance efforts in literacy and mathematics to improve student outcomes.
