Mapping Math Pathways in Nevada

The Nevada Department of Education (NDE) is developing a strategic mathematics plan to continue improving student mathematics outcomes throughout the state.

Specifically, NDE has identified three primary areas of focus to help improve student achievement and educator effectiveness in mathematics education: establish a Grades K–12 mathematics standards review process, develop a statewide numeracy and early mathematics plan, and build a Nevada mathematics framework to guide instruction and implementation of the Nevada mathematics standards statewide.

NDE is partnering with the West Comprehensive Center (West CC) to develop a state process and timeline for reviewing and mapping state math pathways and establish a framework for high-quality implementation of academic standards.

The West CC team will support NDE in achieving these goals by:

  • Facilitating strategic planning sessions with NDE, using existing data and stakeholder engagement findings to inform strategic planning for statewide mathematics education efforts;
  • Conducting national scans of similar states’ mathematics pathways options, content, and academic impact; and
  • Drafting the protocols, language, and resources for design and implementation of state math standards and the framework.

Through these collaborative efforts, NDE will have developed better alignment between math instruction and strategic priorities to improve outcomes throughout the state.
