Insights for Student Success and Engagement

High school graduation is a critical milestone that expands students’ access to postsecondary education, employment, and long-term economic security while strengthening communities and society as a whole. Yet, according to recent data, over 2 million people between the ages of 16 and 24 were considered high school dropouts.

AIR has found that schools can identify students at risk of dropping out within the first 20 days of 9th grade—or even as early as middle school—and provide timely support to help them get back on track for high school graduation.

Drawing on a rigorous evidence base and nearly 20 years of experience developing and implementing the Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring System (EWIMS), Insights for Student Success and Engagement (“Insights” for short) helps school-based teams to implement student-centered data inquiry cycles to identify at risk-students and provide supports to keep them engaged in school.

How AIR Can Help

continuous improvement

Using the student information systems and tools that they already have at their fingertips, the Insights approach helps schools and districts:

  1. Identify and understand student needs;

  2. Align supports to students' needs, and

  3. Monitor and enhance student progress.

AIR’s services include:

  • Insights Summer Training Institute: Through a multi-day training in Arlington, Virginia, AIR expert coaches equip attendees with in-depth training on the Insights approach. Participants develop a preliminary plan and build the skills and resources to begin Insights implementation.

  • Coaching certification: AIR trains district- or school-based staff to earn an official Insights coaching certificate that will equip them to lead implementation of the Insights approach in their schools and districts.

  • On-site training and needs assessment: Our team conducts on-site needs assessments to inform a customized Insights implementation plan. We then provide multi-day training for district and school leaders to prepare them to implement the Insights approach in their context.

  • Data analytics: Using localized school data, we identify indicators (e.g., attendance, grades, credits) to determine the threshold for flagging students in need of additional support.

  • Ongoing coaching: A dedicated AIR Insights coach provides ongoing implementation support to schools and districts throughout the school year.
