Harnessing AI to Strengthen Peer-Mediated Instruction
Artificial intelligence (AI) is opening new doors to help teachers make sense of data that is already available and use it to guide structured group work within the classroom.
Peer-mediated learning—where students work together in structured ways—has been shown to improve academic achievement and increase student engagement and autonomy. This approach not only benefits students but also supports educators by making it easier to personalize instruction.
When students are grouped intentionally, educators can leverage individual strengths, address specific learning needs, and make instruction more relevant and accessible for all learners. Structured peer-mediated learning also allows students to learn from one another and receive targeted support, which is essential for personalized learning.
Teachers can implement peer-mediated learning by grouping students intentionally, modeling student interactions, carefully selecting specific activities and academic content, collecting data, and monitoring progress. However, many teachers lack the time, training, and resources to do this effectively.
The Enhanced Decision Tool
Our project involves creating an Enhanced Decision Tool (EDT)—a user-friendly application for educators powered by AI. This tool combines assessment data with tailored instructional recommendations, helping teachers design, monitor, and adjust peer-mediated learning routines in elementary math classrooms.
The project includes three stages:
- Needs sensing: Understanding teacher challenges and classroom constraints;
- Solution refinement: Designing features that meet those needs; and
- Prototype development: Building and testing the EDT.
The EDT will provide supports such as dynamic student grouping that updates regularly and consolidated and synthesized assessment and performance data.
