Student Agreement To Participate in the IDEAS Research Study
You have been invited to be interviewed as part of the IDEAS research study. Before you decide to participate in the interview, it is important that you understand the research study and that you agree to be part of it.
What is this research study about?
Researchers at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) are working with your school to collect information from students about their experiences in dual enrollment courses and to use this information to help improve dual credit courses.
Why does a researcher from AIR want to talk to you?
AIR is inviting you to be interviewed because you are enrolled in at least 1 dual credit course at a high school in partnership with one of the community colleges participating in this research study.
What will participating in the study involve?
If you agree to be in the study, a researcher will ask you questions about yourself and some of the courses you have taken in school. The interview or focus group will take about 60 minutes. You will receive a $50.00 electronic gift card for participating in the interview or focus group. With your permission, we will record the interview for our records. If you don’t want the interview to be recorded, please let us know.
Are there any risks or benefits to being in the study?
A possible risk for any research is that people outside the study might see the information you share during the interview. AIR researchers will do everything they can to make sure that doesn't happen. For example, AIR will delete the recording after it is transcribed and won’t include your name in any files. There is no benefit to you personally for taking part in this study, but the results of the research will help improve dual credit opportunities for students in the future.
Who will know about your participation in the study?
Only you, your parent or guardian who gave permission for you to participate, and the researchers will know that you participated in the study. If AIR researchers publish reports or give talks about this research, they will not use your name or any other personal information that would identify you.
AIR will protect the privacy of your information. Only a few researchers on the AIR study team will know what you say during the interview. AIR will not share your information with your teachers, school, or the district. Your interview data will not be shared with any other research studies or people not part of the AIR research team.
Will you get paid for being in the study?
If you participate in the interview, AIR will send you a $50 electronic gift card within 1–2 weeks.
Do you have to be in the study?
Participating in the interview is voluntary. Whether you decide to participate in the interview or not will not affect your grades at school, and there will be no punishment as a result of your decision.
If you decide you don’t want to be interviewed or you don’t want to answer a particular question, let the researcher know. You may choose to skip any questions or stop the interview at any time – even after the interview starts.
