Understanding the need to address present and upcoming challenges, the American Hospital Association (AHA) convened the Changing Workforce Task Force to provide input to their board on the future of the health care workforce.

We want to be ahead of that curve to create solutions for the health care workforce that are human centered, digitally enabled, team-based, and promote increased job satisfaction for the people coming to work every day.

- Cathy Jacobson, President and CEO of Froedtert Health, Changing Workforce Task Force Chair

AIR provided thought partnership and facilitation to the task force, made up of 24 hospital and health system executives. The task force was charged with:

  • Helping the AHA explore health care workforce challenges;
  • Identify future trends;
  • Recommending policy and advocacy changes and operational considerations; and
  • Raising awareness of workforce issues in the health care field.

The AIR team worked closely with AHA staff to design and facilitate task force meetings, and conducted environmental scans to support discussions on:

  • Employee wellness;
  • How licensure requirements impact workforce availability;
  • Hospital leadership;
  • Access to data and analytics on workforce trends; and
  • Education cost, funding, capacity, and curriculum.

AIR drafted recommendations to the board based on task force proceedings. These recommendations informed AHA’s strategic planning on how to support their members in addressing their workforce needs.
