Meeting the Complex Growing Needs of Students in California

Today’s PreK–12 students are preparing for a fast‑changing world that requires new skills and deeper learning. California education leaders are strengthening how schools support students so they can meet these growing demands.

The California State Board of Education (CSBE) is partnering with the West Comprehensive Center to develop a shared portrait of a graduate/learner—a clear vision of what students should know and be able to do as they progress through their education.

As part of this work, West CC will:

  • Design and lead in‑person and virtual listening sessions to gather input on the portrait of a graduate/learner; and
  • Analyze and synthesize feedback from these sessions to create a draft graduate/learner profile.

Through this collaboration, the CSBE will gain a deeper understanding of school‑ and district‑level goals for student learning and readiness, helping ensure every learner is prepared for their next step.
