Building Awareness About HIV/AIDS: Julia Galdo Discusses Ongoing Challenges in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS
AIR works to build awareness about the ongoing risk of HIV/AIDS, especially the long odds in high-risk communities. AIR’s Health Program translates HIV research into effective communication for the general public, working with partners such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In late July, AIR hosted a screening of deepsouth, a new documentary on the rural South’s HIV/AIDS epidemic. Dr. David Holtgrave of John Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health led a lively discussion about how such factors as poverty, race, stigma, and access to affordable quality care relate to the epidemic in the South—home to nearly half of all new infections, according to the CDC. The event coincided with the International AIDS Conference, held in Washington, D.C.
In this video interview, Julia Galdo, AIR managing communications specialist, talks about the persistent challenges of communicating the importance of HIV/AIDS at a time when many no longer see it as a pressing public health concern.
