Dr. Gwen Willis-Darpoh to Discuss Ethnic Diversity of K-12 U.S. Classrooms and Impact on Student Performance at International Conference in Vienna
Washington, D.C. – Dr. Gwen Willis-Darpoh, a senior researcher at the American Institutes for Research (AIR), will examine the ethnic diversity of K-12 classrooms in the United States and its impact on student performance during the Diversity in Organizations, Communities and Nations Annual Conference, being held in Vienna, Austria, July 9-11.
Her July 10 workshop on “Creating Culturally Responsive Learning Environments for Diverse Student Populations: Effective Strategies That Improve Student Engagement and Academic Outcomes,” will look at current data on the ethnic diversity of K-12 U.S. classrooms and explore the characteristics of a culturally responsive classroom and student performance.
Diversity in Organizations, Communities and Nations is a knowledge community comprised of an international conference, associated journals, books, and social media forums that offer the opportunity for discussion on the forms and futures of human difference and diversity. Conference attendees will include leaders in the field, as well as emerging artists and scholars.
Dr. Willis-Darpoh has more than 35 years of experience in the field of education across various settings, including mental health promotion, youth violence prevention, and special education with particular emphasis on students with behavioral and emotional needs, as well as those with learning disabilities. She also has significant expertise in teacher training/culturally responsive teaching, and issues related to diversity. She currently serves on AIR’s Diversity Advisory Committee and the Disparities and Disproportionalities Workgroup.
Early in her career, Dr. Willis-Darpoh worked with at-risk youth in Washington, D.C. before moving to the U.S. Virgin Islands to teach learning disabled students. She is a member of the Fulbright Association’s National Board of Directors and serves on the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Research and Innovation Advisory Board (HETL). She is also the President and Founding Director of the International Association for Blended Learning (IABL) and is a certified blended learning developer.
