AIR Institute Fellow Julia Lane to Preview New Book, 'Privacy, Big Data, and the Public Good' at NYU Event
Washington, D.C. – Dr. Julia Lane, an Institute Fellow at the American Institutes for Research (AIR), will discuss privacy issues surrounding big data at an upcoming workshop hosted by New York University’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP). The event is a preview of an upcoming book co-edited by Dr. Lane, Privacy, Big Data, and the Public Good: Frameworks for Engagement, and will be held 8 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Monday, June 16 at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City.
“The use of big data, for better or worse, is now a fact of life,” Dr. Lane said. “Work using such data can reduce taxpayer costs and increase the efficient management of government services. But current frameworks for research access do not shed light on how such access can occur in a responsible fashion. Privacy, Big Data, and the Public Good: Frameworks for Engagement addresses privacy concerns over the use of big data for commercial and intelligence purposes, and describes how these data can harness public good. This book is the first of its kind to provide in one resource an accessible summary of the legal, economic and statistical thought that frames the many privacy issues associated with big data use. Also included are practical suggestions for protecting privacy and confidentiality that can help researchers, policymakers and practitioners.
Dr. Lane is participating in the CUSP event as a speaker for the editor’s panel and as a moderator for a discussion on practical concerns of working with big data. Also joining the workshop are other big data experts and the book’s co-editors, Victoria Stodden of Columbia University, Stefan Bender of the Institute for Employment Research of the German Federal Employment Agency, and Helen Nissenbaum of NYU.
