AIR Experts Address Key Higher Education Issues at the Education Writers Association National Seminar

Washington, D.C. – Steven Hurlburt and Mark Schneider of the American Institutes for Research (AIR) will discuss key issues facing higher education’s stakeholders during separate appearances at the May 17-19, 2012 National Seminar of the Education Writers Association, where leading U.S. education journalists meet to strengthen their writing and reporting skills, learn from each other, and network with colleagues.

The National Seminar, being held in Philadelphia, is co-hosted by the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

On May 17, Hurlburt, a research analyst and deputy director of the Delta Cost Project at AIR, will participate in a workshop for journalists on “Examining College Spending and Its Link to Price.” Workshop participants will probe the trends behind college tuition increases and offer “guidance on how journalists can make better sense of the numbers.” The Delta Cost Project, a nationally recognized initiative, monitors and identifies revenue and spending trends in public and private high education.

Schneider, a vice president at AIR and former commissioner of the federal National Center for Education Statistics, will participate in a Higher Education Plenary Session on May 18 called “Can Community Colleges Get Better?” Schneider has written numerous AIR studies, including “The Hidden Costs of Community Colleges.”
