Supporting Evidence-Based Practices for English Learners in Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is working to update the Massachusetts English Learner (EL) Blueprint for Success. This revision aims to reflect the latest research and district practices in the state, improve student outcomes, and align with state priorities.
DESE is partnering with the Northeast Comprehensive Center to identify effective strategies and promising practices for English learner education in Massachusetts.
Northeast CC will support DESE by:
- Conducting a literature scan and reviewing English learner plans from other states;
- Conducting targeted “Bright Spot” listening sessions to highlight effective systems-level practices for supporting English learner success; and
- Sharing recommendations for how DESE might revise their EL Blueprint for Success to further integrate best practices and support schools and districts in implementing those practices.
Through this collaboration, DESE will better understand how leadership, school structures, and district systems can support improved outcomes for English learners across the state. School and district leaders will draw on research and evidence gathered through this project to inform their system-building and instructional improvement efforts, leading to improvement over time in English learners’ experiences in Massachusetts.
