Considering the decline in preventive care services and the continuing pandemic, it is important that health care providers ensure that their patients understand the continued need for preventive care and the efforts health care providers and systems have taken to make health care seeking behavior safe. Because they have likely established trust with their patients, providers are best positioned to communicate when a patient should receive in-person care or whether telehealth is sufficient; AIR’s survey provides further insights.

Brief
COVID-19 dramatically accelerated the use of telehealth in behavioral healthcare, In the context of surging overdose-related mortality rates, the need to remove barriers to the equitable delivery of evidence-based care for treating opioid use disorder (OUD) in a telehealth setting has never been more urgent. Colleagues across AIR and IMPAQ collaborated on an issue brief to understand the pandemic’s impact on treatment approaches for OUD and what policymakers, providers, and stakeholders can do to ensure equitable and effective telehealth treatment with medications for OUD.
Project
Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, rates for routine preventive care and chronic condition monitoring have dropped as efforts have increased to limit exposure and spread of the COVID-19 virus. Through administration of a national survey, researchers at AIR seek to understand and assess changes in individuals’ usage of medical and dental services before and after the public health emergency.

Welcome Baby, a Los Angeles County-based home-visiting program sponsored by First 5 LA, provides an opportunity for new parents to learn about early childhood development and obtain assistance on issues such as basic health care, insurance coverage, nutrition, breastfeeding, family violence, maternal depression, or improving home safety. First 5 LA contracted with AIR, and its partners at Georgetown University and Juárez & Associates, to conduct a longitudinal study of the program.
Project
To help meet the needs of vulnerable residents, San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services engaged AIR to conduct research and evaluations to improve integrated behavioral health services and systems. AIR also is working closely with county personnel to develop specific steps to address findings of the analyses.
