David Seidenfeld Named Senior Vice President for the American Institutes for Research

David Seidenfeld, a researcher with extensive experience designing and implementing evaluations of international economic, health and education programs, has been named Senior Vice President for the American Institutes for Research (AIR). Seidenfeld leads AIR’s International Development Division, oversees its Technology Services and Data Science practices, and serves as executive liaison for the organization’s Institutional Review Board.

AIR Researchers to Discuss a Range of Education Issues at the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Annual Conference

Experts from AIR and IMPAQ, an AIR affiliate, will present at several sessions during the annual conference of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), being held virtually April 25 to May 2, 2021. The theme for this year’s conference is “Social Responsibility within Changing Contexts,” and focuses on closely examining the work of the field and how others experience the work in a changing environment with a growing variety of people who may or may not share the same visions for the future.

Women's Groups and COVID-19: Impact, Challenges and Policy Implications

In a policy brief released in the early stages of the COVID pandemic in June 2020, the Evidence Consortium on Women’s Groups examined the implications of the pandemic and the lockdown for women’s groups. What have we learned since then? On April 13 at 9 a.m. EDT, the ECWG held a discussion on women’s groups and COVID, with the Africa Centre for Systematic Reviews, AIR, the Population Council, and the World Bank.

Examining the Educational Spillover Effects of Severe Natural Disasters: The Case of Hurricane Maria

While debates about cross-border migration remain a contentious topic of debate in developed countries, there is growing concern about increasing rates of internal migration driven by climate change. This study examines the effects of internal migration driven by severe natural disasters on students in host communities, and the mechanisms behind these effects, using the large influx of migrants into Florida public schools in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

An Examination of Early Grade Reading Assessments in Central Asia: Using Factor Analysis to Determine the Latent Data Structure in Kyrgyz, Russian, and Tajik

The early grade reading assessment (EGRA) is frequently used in low and middle-income countries to inform the state of reading outcomes and reading instruction. In this study, Grade 2 and 4 assessment results in the Kyrgyz, Russian, and Tajik languages from the Kyrgyz Republic (4,751 pupils) and Tajikistan (4,328 pupils) were analyzed to determine the number and nature of the underlying EGRA constructs.
