See a rundown of the latest numbers on bullying. (All figures are from 2013 reported data, the latest available, unless noted otherwise. Data were reported by students ages 12–18.)

New Report Co-Written by AIR Sheds Light on Campus Hate Crimes, School Safety

The annual Indicators of School Crime and Safety report, co-produced by the American Institutes for Research, was released today by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The report presents the most current data on crime and safety at schools and on college campuses from the perspectives of students, teachers, principals and postsecondary institutions. AIR experts were involved in all aspects of the publication, including statistical analysis, writing of key findings, report design, and quality control review. AIR has co-written the Indicators of School Crime and Safety reports since 1999.

Cautious Optimism and a Path Forward to Reduce Bullying

Bullying is on the decline, but evidence is mounting that it is even more toxic for children and adolescents than previously thought. In this commentary, David Osher suggests the need for an interim strategy until anti-bullying efforts are in full force, such as the infusion approach, which integrates anti-bullying initiatives into other school-wide activities.

Bullying Prevention

The 2018 Indicators of School Crime and Safety reports that 20 percent of students ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school during the 2017 school year. As more is being learned about the negative psychological and physical effects of bullying, researchers are focusing on how to address the problem. The research and resources featured here relate to efforts to prevent violence in schools and help young people feel safe and supported.
