Sarah Caverly

Principal Researcher

Sarah Caverly is a principal researcher at AIR. She has over 15 years of experience in program evaluation, data analysis, and the provision of training, coaching, and technical support. Dr. Caverly is a co-deputy director of the What Works Clearinghouse Statistics, Website, and Training (WWC SWAT) contract and the principal investigator on a randomized controlled trial of the Literacy First tutoring program. She is the co-PI on two Education, Innovation and Research grants, one of which is a mid-phase grant evaluating the My Teaching Partner-Secondary coaching model and the other focuses on the development and implementation of a culturally responsive restorative practices program.

Dr. Caverly previously served on the leadership team for the Regional Education Laboratory Southwest (REL Southwest) and oversees a portfolio of projects providing technical support focused on building the capacity of state and local education agencies to use evidence-based research to implement, select, and engage in continuous improvement on key educational issues (e.g., college and career readiness, English Learners, early childhood, school improvement, and teacher preparation programs). She recently served as the project director on three large-scale randomized controlled trials of Open Court Reading, Voyager’s Passport Reading Journeys, and Everyday Mathematics, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Institutes of Education Sciences. She has been immersed in several state- and national-level evaluation initiatives, collecting and analyzing data, developing instruments and quality indicators, and conducting literature reviews.

Dr. Caverly has both research and applied experience, having taught preschool and undergraduate courses for several years. Her research interests include early childhood education, early literacy, socio-emotional development, and program evaluation.
