Michael P. Cohen

Principal Psychometrician/Statistician

Michael P. Cohen is a principal psychometrician/statistician in the Education Statistics Program at AIR. He is a sampling statistician with over 40 years’ experience in complex survey design and estimation, including sample design, imputation, variances, sample size and power determination, weighting, and multilevel models (hierarchical linear models). This experience includes 13 years at the National Center for Education Statistics of the U.S. Department of Education where he consulted on all their major surveys.

Dr. Cohen is an Accredited Professional Statistician (PStat™) of the American Statistical Association. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Educational Research Association, the American Statistical Association, the Royal Statistical Society, and the Washington Academy of Sciences. Dr. Cohen is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute and Sigma Xi. He is a senior member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Dr. Cohen graduated with honors from the University of California, San Diego, and has a Ph.D. in mathematics (specialty: statistics) from UCLA.
