Kim Gattis

Principal Researcher

Kim Gattis is a nationally recognized expert in large-scale mathematics assessments through her work at the state, national, and international levels. For over a decade she has led AIR projects supporting the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) for the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics.  Currently she is leading the AIR team supporting NAEP assessment development and scoring. Gattis also serves as a senior mathematics content technical advisor for the NAEP program and U.S. participation in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

Throughout her career Gattis has led multiple framework and item pool comparison studies involving NAEP with the international assessments, TIMSS, and PISA. She recently served as a consultant to a study comparing the NAEP mathematics framework with the mathematics Common Core State Standards as well as a study examining the mathematical expectations in the Next Generation Science Standards.

Gattis is a past-president of the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics. Prior to joining AIR, Gattis worked as the mathematics curriculum and assessment specialist for the Kansas State Department of Education.  She has also taught mathematics at the high school and college levels.
