Heidi Goertzen is a senior technical assistance consultant at AIR. Dr. Goertzen’s current work involves building capacity through technical assistance to state education agencies (SEAs) served by the Southeast Comprehensive Center (SECC). Goertzen serves as the SECC liaison to the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE), and leads and contributes to projects throughout the region. Her work focuses on SEA capacity building in strategic planning, program evaluation, and continuous improvement in the area of English language learners (ELLs). Goertzen also coordinates and participates in a data analytics project that supports the ALSDE research and development section with assessing the state’s strategic plan for education.
Dr. Goertzen has extensive experience working at state and district levels providing leadership and expertise in English language learners (ELLs), including the design and implementation of the ALSDE ELL-professional development academy and ELL school improvement coaching initiative. Her dissertation research explored teacher quality in terms of teacher qualifications, characteristics, and practices as they relate to ELLs.
Prior to joining SEDL (now merged with AIR) in June 2013, Dr. Goertzen served as the federal programs, student assessment, and Title III director for a local education agency in Alabama. Goertzen has nine years of experience as an English as a Second Language teacher in Texas, Indiana, and Alabama and is certified in ESL and education administration.
