Recent estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show annual HIV infections decreased nearly 20% from 2008 to 2014, to 37,600—in large part due to increased testing and treatment. As part of CDC's Act Against AIDS initiative, HIV Treatment Works is a national social marketing campaign encouraging people living with HIV to get in care, start taking HIV medications, remain in care, and adhere to treatment.
Many cultural, socioeconomic, and health-related factors contribute to the HIV epidemic and prevention challenges in U.S. transgender communities. As part of the Act Against AIDS Initiative, AIR works with the CDC to adapt existing and develop new HIV prevention and communication materials for healthcare providers and community-based organizations that treat transgender populations.
Research has found that talking about HIV and AIDS is associated with increased condom use, testing, and knowledge about prevention—all of which are associated with fewer new infections. Sources of health information and knowledge are changing dramatically. While we used to rely on clinicians, social service providers, families, friends, and traditional media for guidance, now we also turn to a vast array of new resources in a digital world. AIR's work leverages both traditional and digital strategies to develop integrated communication and behavior-change strategies. AIR informs and engages a wide spectrum of audiences, targeting key influencers and various public groups.
