Recognizing the importance of early childhood development, the Zambian government has committed to scaling up programs that support health, nutrition, and early learning/stimulation for children. UNICEF partnered with AIR and researchers from the University of Zambia to gather data on traditional parenting and child care practices across diverse cultures in Zambia and assess these data against current scientific evidenceto determine which traditional parenting practices may contribute or be detrimental to children’s development.

Although the use of technology in education shows a lot of promise for improving learning outcomes in low-and middle-income countries, the evidence on its impacts is underwhelming. Its effectiveness could, however, be improved if technology were combined with a strong focus on pedagogical practices. This study focuses on the effects and cost-effectiveness of Impact Network’s eSchool 360 program in producing improvements in learning outcomes among students in community schools in rural Zambia.

Despite the promise and potential of cash transfers to empower women, the evidence supporting this outcome is mixed. This paper based on an evaluation of the Government of Zambia’s Child Grant Programme, a transfer given to mothers or primary caregivers of young children aged 0 to 5, shows there is potential for national, poverty-targeted, unconditional, government-run programmes in Africa to improve the well-being of female beneficiaries.

Teachers are a critical resource for children in refugee and emergency settings. This article explores field research conducted in Algeria and Ethiopia, finding that cost-effective policies and technical responses that begin to address teacher retention challenges will affect student achievement, reinvigorate teaching forces, and attract new teachers to serve in even the most difficult contexts.
Lusaka, Zambia faces many challenges with regard to water supply, sanitation, and waste management. This is especially true for residents of peri-urban areas, where many of the city’s poorest and most vulnerable people reside. The Millennium Challenge Account-Zambia supports the implementation of water supply, water quality, sanitation, and hygiene interventions under the Lusaka Water Supply Sanitation and Drainage Project.
