India is the largest producer of cotton in the world. AIR and its partners conducted a social, economic, and environmental impact assessment of cotton farming in Madhya Pradesh, with the aim of better understanding the outcomes for cotton farming on the farmers and the environment.

Eeffective approaches to improving teacher quality are hard to find—particularly teacher professional development programs. Partnering with Teachstone and Learning Forward, AIR is leading an effort to scale, refine, and test a teacher professional development program: MyTeachingPartner-Secondary. Researchers at the University of Virginia created the program based on their work linking classroom environments to student engagement, and they have demonstrated the program’s effectiveness in randomized controlled trials published in 2011 and 2015.
The Special Olympics Unified Schools program creates opportunities for the social inclusion of youth with intellectual disabilities through Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership development, and Whole School Engagement activities; however, little is known about whether this program has similar effects outside the United States. To support Special Olympics in increasing its evaluation efforts of Unified Schools programs internationally, AIR partnered with Special Olympics International to develop an evaluation framework that will serve as a guide for future international evaluations.
Career and technical education (CTE) prepares students with academic, technical, and employability skills for success in the workplace and in further education. More research is needed to understand its effects on student outcomes. The CTE Research Network seeks to meet this need by increasing the number of impact studies and strengthening the capacity of the field to conduct and use rigorous research.
Selected by the U.S. Library of Congress, AIR conducted a five-year evaluation of mentoring enhancement demonstration programs funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The goal is to assess whether strategic enhancements to the roles that mentors play will improve youth outcomes.
