Failure to reconnect can mean that many end up back in prison: 68 percent of those released are incarcerated again within five years. As competency-based education (CBE) grows in prominence in higher education, leaders of CBE programs will be asked to demonstrate how students in those programs “stack up” against students in traditional non-CBE programs across an array of outcomes, from learning to time-to-degree and affordability. in the summer of 2014 the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) launched the LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Prevention Initiative to identify successful strategies for ensuring that no young person is left without a home because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. Many states are attempting to identify schools that perform better than schools with similar populations. Such “beating-the-odds” schools offer opportunities to identify promising practices that can be implemented by other schools serving similar populations. This study uses data from the Michigan Department of Education to demonstrate how methodological decisions affect which schools are identified as beating the odds.

Can deeper learning approaches lead to higher graduation rates? Consistent with the findings from the original Study of Deeper Learning, newly completed analyses find a graduation rate advantage of 8 percentage points for students in participating deeper learning network high schools compared with similar students in matched non-network high schools.
