Substance Misuse and Abuse
Substance misuse and abuse affects more than 23 million Americans and involves a broad range of concerns, from the nonmedical use of prescription drugs to underage drinking. Issues with alcohol or other drugs can contribute to significant academic, family, and life challenges; mask or aggravate mental health problems; increase the risk of injury and exposure to violence; and lead to involvement with the child welfare and justice systems. Families and communities face increasing challenges to health, safety, and well-being when substance abuse problems go unaddressed.
People who misuse and abuse substances may require integrated physical and behavioral health care services to achieve health, well-being, and recovery. College campuses and communities need comprehensive approaches to prevention that incorporate individual and environmental strategies to achieve moderate and legal use.
