International Development
EQUIP1 Leader Award – With a focus on building educational quality through classrooms, schools and communities, AIR, together with a team of 14 partner organizations, conducts a variety of centrally managed cross-national studies, pilot projects, and institutional strengthening activities. Additionally, EQUIP1 supports an information communication center that assists in maximizing the impact of activity interventions by disseminating best practices and lessons learned. EQUIP1 is also the design and management mechanism for individual country education reform programs focusing on educational quality.
EQUIP1 Associate Awards
- Djibouti AIDE – Designed to strengthen the quality of basic education in the areas of pre-service and in-service teacher development, curriculum reform and textbook production, girls’ access and success in school, and community-based non-formal education and literacy programs. - Malawi MESA – Draws on lessons learned and best practices from past programs in Malawi in the areas of cluster schools, teacher professional development, community mobilization using traveling drama troupes, teacher mentors, field-based supervision and monitoring, continuous assessment of student learning, and others. U.S. Agency for International Development/Malawi.
- El Salvador EXCELL – Works to improve student performance in 250 rural schools through implementation of effective educational policies, increased capacity of school principals, and increased analytic content of educational research. U.S. Agency for International Development/El Salvador.
- El Salvador EDIFAM – An early childhood development project designed to improve the care and education of children, particularly poor, rural children, ages zero through six, through increased capacity of care givers and learning facilitators. U.S. Agency for International Development/El Salvador.
- Macedonia SEA – Designed to strengthen vocational education to assist in the development of a certification program for directors of secondary schools, with an overall focus to help make students’ experiences in 40 secondary schools more relevant for their futures as productive workers and democratic citizens. - India REACH – A two-pronged approach aimed at supporting and strengthening the capacity of Indian NGOs and foundations to attract and retain vulnerable children in their formal and non-formal education programs, through improved service delivery capabilities of a core group of NGOs and Lead NGO support to smaller, less experienced NGOs. - Africa Bureau – Five uniquely distinct activities: 1) study to assess the feasibility of extending Sesame Street programming to West Africa; 2) creation of an HIV/AIDS mobile task team for West African countries; 3) support for the herd boys of Lesotho; 4) support to HIV/AIDS orphan and vulnerable children in Swaziland; and 5) community radio programs to help mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS in Zambia. - Haiti ICSPE – Interventions to improve access to quality educational services, with increased involvement of local communities in Haiti’s remote Northwest province. U.S. Agency for International Development/Haiti.
- Kenya EMAP – Increased educational opportunities and support for children of marginalized populations in Kenya’s Coast and North East Provinces, through increased community participation and linkages between ECD madrasses and government primary schools. - Tanzania – Program to improve access to and the quality of education in ECD classes, primary schools and secondary schools of Zanzibar Island. U.S. Agency for International Development/Tanzania.
- Egypt ERP – Program to implement Education Reform in seven governoratesfor all levels of schooling from Pre-K thru Secondary. The project will also assist in improving community based Early Childhood Development Centers and Life skill Centers. Additionally 330 classrooms will be built and 120,000 Girls Scholarships awarded. EQUIP2 Leader Award – Designed to assist countries to formulate and implement education policies, improve education systems, strengthen management skills, and expand and improve data collection and analysis activities in support of strengthening quality education. [sub to AED]
EQUIP2 Associate Awards
- Zambia – Designed to support the Education Management Information System in-country, as well as decentralization, policy implementation, and monitoring and evaluation objectives in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.[sub to AED]
- Jordan – Designed to improve Early Childhood Education through the renovation of classrooms, improvement and expansion of curriculum, and the development of a national system of in-service training for teachers and supervisors in linkage with a system of licensing and accreditation. [sub to AED]
Sudan SBEP– Focusing on strengthened pre-service and in-service teacher training for the primary grades, community mobilization, and development of potential teachers through non-formal education approaches. In addition, developing ways to reach refugee and nomadic groups with non-traditional education delivery mechanisms and community support for increasing the number of women teachers. [sub to CARE]
Pakistan ESRA– Designed to strengthen education policy and planning, improved capacity of teachers and education administrators; improved youth and adult literacy, and expanded public-private partnerships in support of a country-wide education reform effort. [sub to RTI]
Ethiopia BESO II – Support to the Government of Ethiopia’s policy of devolving responsibility for primary education to the regions as well as programs in individual regions to improve quality and equity in primary education. [sub to AED]
Uganda UPHOLD – Working to expand sustainable opportunities for rural sector growth in the education and health sectors. The program seeks to reduce total fertility and increase contraceptive prevalence, reduce the prevalence of HIV particularly among pregnant women and adolescent men, reduce under-five mortality, increase immunization coverage, increase average test scores in math and English, increase the number of children qualifying for entry in secondary schools, increase the quality of educational instruction, and increase girls’ enrollment and retention. Brazil Jovem – Working with local partners in the Brazilian cities of Salvador, Recefe, and Fortaleza to provide disadvantaged youth 14-21 years old with the skills they need to obtain gainful employment. U.S. Agency for International Development/Brazil.
Zambia BEST CHOICE - Targets communities in Zambia’s Eastern Province, mobilizing stakeholders at all levels – parents, teachers, school management committees, local leaders, and Ministry officials – to combat child labor and encourage basic education. U.S. Department of Labor.
Technical Assistance and Support for Media/PR (IQC/5 years) – A worldwide project designed to allow USAID Missions and Bureaus to easily access high quality technical assistance and support for their activities in maternal and child health, nutrition, infectious disease, and HIV/AIDS. Technical Assistance and Support for Media/Global Health (IQC/5 years) – A worldwide mechanism that covers the entire spectrum of USAID-supported health, infectious disease, and population areas. [sub to MSH]
FEMA Flood Insurance – Research and evaluation to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the National Flood Insurance Program and to suggest practical recommendations to enhance the program’s effectiveness and efficiency. U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Secondary Education in Africa Thematic Study – A research report designed to produce an overview and analysis of issues regarding governance, management, and accountability in junior and senior secondary education in selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. World Bank.
