Communicating about Health Risk to Communities: A Training Workshop and Handbook for Field Personnel
- AIR collaborated with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to develop a strategic plan and materials for several types and levels of target audiences, and created a Risk Communication Training course with workbooks and video. The course enabled the client to prepare health communication specialists for managing risk communication activities in the field.
Health Information Networks, Clearinghouses, Online Information Systems, Web Sites, Online Product Catalog and Publishing
- In order to disseminate advances in research to health care providers and the general public on behalf of the National Institutes of Health (NHLBI; NCI; NIAID), AIR developed the Web site, provided clearinghouse services, produced an online catalog for ordering publications, and liaisoned with professional groups and the health care industry. Project work resulted in an enormous growth in the number of inquiries handled, an increase in Web site activity and the number of downloads of products, and strengthened the program’s cost-recovery power.
I-131 Public Education Campaign
- The goal of this project was the development of a communication plan to inform multiethnic “high exposure” and “low exposure” groups about potential health risks due to exposure to I-131 from the Nevada Test Sites for the National Cancer Institute (NCI). With community involvement and focus group testing of messages, AIR developed a comprehensive report with findings, implications, and recommendations for producing educational materials on exposure to I-131.
Biodefense Communication, “Face the Media”–A Course for CDC Spokespersons
- AIR developed and delivered a one-day course, Face the Media, covering the basics of crisis communication that gave Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) spokespersons hands-on, on-camera training in emergency risk communication. AIR developed a curriculum, course manual, and pocket card with tips, message transitions, and sample questions that could be anticipated during the critical, initial hours of a crisis. Thousands of these cards have been distributed to public health communications personnel nationwide.
Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC) Training: Curriculum Development and Implementation for Federal, State, and Local Officials
- For the Center of Disease Control and Prevention’s Office of Communication, AIR developed a comprehensive communication strategy and develop a two-day curriculum to teach Federal, State, and local health communication officials the basics of emergency risk communication. The curriculum included a participant’s manual, a book on crisis and emergency communication theory, which received a 2003 Public Relations Society of America “Bronze Anvil” Award, a CD-ROM with tutorials and worksheets, and a short video.
- Based on best practices developed by KPMG, and a needs assessment performed among DC University EMP personnel, AIR developed an emergency management training program that enabled DC area universities to link their current individual plans with the District Response Plan so that enhanced communication and coordination between parties can be ensured in the event of a major emergency.
Smallpox Outbreak and Vaccination Adverse Event Communication Planning and Preparation
- AIR developed comprehensive communication plans to assist CDC in planning for and responding to a deliberate smallpox attack and in responding to potential adverse events that might result from a large scale smallpox vaccination program.
National Plan to Eliminate Syphilis from the United States: Social Marketing and Health Communication Planning
- This project capitalizes on the current opportunity to eradicate syphilis with an intensive communications campaign to exploit the all-time low incidence in 2000 as well as the aggregation of half of all cases in only 21 counties. AIR produced a comprehensive community mobilization kit, including public service announcements (PSAs) for print media and radio. AIR will coordinate the communications campaign in 22 locations nationwide
Strategic Communications for Prevention of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), and Tuberculosis (TB)
- AIR provides a comprehensive media relations program for the Office of Communications at CDC’s National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention (NCHSTP). Each day, AIR team members produce a Morning Report that captures key articles on the topic diseases from seven media. In addition, the team monitors hundreds of US and international media outlets and writes the news summaries that comprise the content of each day’s edition of CDC Prevention News Update, which is posted on the Web and listserved to thousands of subscribers around the world. Our New York-based sub-contractor The Corkery Group provides NCHSTP with media strategy development and outreach, national and international conference support, and priority issues management.
Strategic Release of the Hanford Thyroid Disease Study Draft Results
- AIR developed strategic and tactical plans for release of a highly sensitive and controversial report, the Hanford Thyroid Disease Study, within a period of three weeks. AIR developed the message strategy; prepared “core” messages, press releases, questions and answers, summaries of findings and of the scientific process, announcements of public meetings, media advisories, and other materials; and monitored and summarized print reports.
- The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) is a partnership between the CDC and the National Institutes for Health (NIH), and over 200 public and private community organizations seeking to improve the treatment and outcome of people with diabetes, promote early diagnosis, and prevent the onset of the disease. Prospect Center of AIR’s approach to the program has been to reach communities through a variety of social marketing approaches such as media campaigns, magnet events, and community events in order to affect behavior change.
- For the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), AIR developed and operated a distribution and information center for the Team Nutrition Schools (TNS) program designed to process and fulfill requests from schools for individual and bulk quantities of Team Nutrition education materials. To support this project, AIR maintained a TNS warehouse and distribution facility for the storage, processing, and distribution of all materials. Over the course of this project, Prospect Center staff assembled and distributed approximately 23,000 Team Nutrition Resource Kits and approximately 23,000 Certificates to schools enrolled in the Team Nutrition program.
