Brad Strickland, Ph.D.
Senior Research Scientist
Dr. Strickland is working at AIR to strengthen cross sectoral programs in health, education and environmental behavior change within the International Development Program. As a technical advisor for ongoing AIR activities he provides guidance on school health and nutrition, assists ministries of education to develop and implement comprehensive responses to HIV/AIDS, and supports community behavior change programs addressing endemic social problems, from child labor to sexual violence. Dr. Strickland also helps the International Development Program apply outstanding lessons of social science research to strengthen strategies and approaches for community-led social change.
Dr. Strickland’s interest in international development began while working as a research assistant on an economics project in Lusaka, Zambia in 1986. Field research (1990-1993) for his Ph.D. on the cultural history and politics of rural villages in Eastern Zambia led him to professional work improving state social services in rural Africa, especially education, health and environmental services. Prior to coming to AIR, Dr. Strickland worked at USAID for eight years, beginning in 1996 as a post-doctoral Science and Diplomacy Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served as Cross Sectoral Advisor to the USAID Africa Bureau Education Team where his primary role was to help education programs in Africa address health and environmental problems while maintaining a strategic focus on strengthening education systems. Strickland also served as the Africa Bureau’s focal point for HIV/AIDS and education, leading the formation of the USAID-sponsored Mobile Task Team (MTT) for HIV/AIDS and Education, based at the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa. Strickland received his PhD in Anthropology of Religion from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, his MA in Religious Studies from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and his BA in Art History and Fine Arts from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
