Susan J. Lapham

Executive Director of ESSI-Statistics

Susan J. Lapham is currently Executive Director of ESSI-Statistics for the Federal Statistics Program with AIR. Her academic interests include survey methods, demography, and statistics. She has an M.S. in Survey Methodology from the joint University of Maryland/University of Michigan program in Survey Methodology. Prior to joining AIR, Susan worked for 19 years in the federal statistical system for the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the Census Bureau. She also spent a short sabbatical at the Committee on National Statistics at the National Academy of Sciences working with the Committee on Census 2010. Most recently, she directed the statistical programs at the Bureau of Transportation Statistics for the US Department of Transportation. She has had a long-term interest in building and enhancing statistical programs and helped to establish a transportation statistics discipline within the federal government that promoted statistical and survey research and improved data quality for the field of transportation. Her education research background includes work on interviewer variance in the National Survey of College Graduates and the National Survey of Recent College Graduates, as well the development of a number of products on educational attainment from the 1990 Census.
