San Keller

Principal Research Scientist

Dr. San Keller, a Principal Research Scientist at AIR, provides intellectual leadership for the design and evaluation of psychometrically-based measures of health and health care. She is the AIR leader for the hospital patient experiences survey (HCAHPS), the experience survey for hemodialysis patients who receive care in dialysis facilities (ESRD CAHPS), the experience survey for family member of nursing home residents (NH CAHPS Family), and the CAHPS II Analysis team; as well as a member of the ambulatory survey (ACAHPS) core and instrumentation teams. She is also director of AIR’s contract with TRICARE to develop a survey of dental care beneficiaries experience.

Prior to joining AIR, Dr. Keller was Director of Health Care Quality and Outcomes Research Program and a senior research psychologist at RTI, International. Also at RTI, she directed the Inpatient Rehabilitation Outcomes Measurement Project for CMS and directed the survey-based measurement for the Medical Outcomes Monitoring System, also for CMS. Prior to joining RTI, Dr. Keller was lecturer at the Harvard School of Public Health, Research Scientist at The Health Institute, and Assistant Professor of Research in the Department of Psychiatry at Tufts University Medical School, where she developed and evaluated health-related quality of life (HRQL) and health status measurement approaches for use in randomized clinical trials of therapy across numerous conditions and diseases.

Dr. Keller has been principal author or co-author of numerous publications related to the development and analysis of patient reported outcomes. She holds a Ph.D. in Quantitative Psychology from Penn State University.
