Dr. Shep Kellam serves as the Director of the Center for Integrating Education and Prevention Research in Schools. This Center unifies public education and public mental health research in order to understand and prevent the development of mental and behavioral problems as well as promote academic achievement and social adaptation to school, home, and community. He is also the current Principal Investigator of Prevention Services in Schools for Early Drug Abuse Risk, which is designed to test the effectiveness of a Whole Day program (WD) aimed at improving 1) teacher’s instructional practices, particularly around reading; 2) teacher’s classroom behavior management practices; and 3) family-classroom partnerships around homework and behavior. Dr. Kellam is also the Principal Investigator of Reducing Violence by Joining Education and Prevention, a planning grant aimed at developing intervention modules in the areas of curriculum, instruction, classroom behavior management, teacher-parent partnership, and safety in non-instructional spaces and a multi-level system of service delivery. Dr. Kellam received his M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and his B.S. in Philosophy from Loyola College.
