Anestine Hector-Mason, Ph.D.

Research Scientist

Anestine Hector-Mason, Ph.D., a Research Scientist at the American Institutes for Research, contributes to several projects, including the National Center for Technology Innovation (NCTI), the Center for Implementing Technology in Education (CITEd), the National Reporting System (NRS), and to the adult ESL explicit literacy study in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Hector-Mason completed her doctorate in 2004 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Rhetoric and Linguistics, with concentration in the areas of Adult ESL and cross cultural communications.

Prior to joining AIR, Dr. Hector-Mason worked as the lead academic coordinator for the Institute for Student Achievement in New York, guiding other academic coordinators in providing enrichment in reading and writing to New York City’s Board of Education’s “at-risk” student populations from grades 7 – 12. As Team Coordinator in the Immigrant Services department of Project Reach Youth in New York, Dr. Hector-Mason taught ESL to youth and adults, and directed an immigrant youth program, providing opportunities for such newcomer youths to adjust culturally to schooling and life in their communities.

Her other experience includes teaching at Long Island University, The college of New Rochelle, several campuses at CUNY, Central Texas College, and Tarleton State University, a member of Texas A & M University. Moreover, Dr. Hector-Mason has directed an After-School program for the New York City YWCA; worked as language lab coordinator for the American Language Institute at Indiana University of Pennsylvania; as ESL coordinator for the Shoemaker campus of the Killeen Independent School district, and as an instructional coordinator for the PEIC program at Tarleton State University, a collaborative project with Texas Education Agency designed to strengthen school-university partnerships. Dr. Hector-Mason earned Masters’ degrees in TESOL education and Teaching Writing from Long Island University and a Bachelor’s degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.
