Michael S. Garet, Ph.D., is a Vice President at AIR. His areas of specialization include methodological issues in the evaluation of educational effects, the analysis of large-scale longitudinal survey and achievement data in education, and the analysis of data on organizational structure and process. He is currently co-principal investigator of the Longitudinal Evaluation of the Effects of MSP Professional Development on Improving Math and Science Instruction, an NSF-supported study being conducted by AIR, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research (WCER) at the University of Wisconsin. He is also principal investigator for ED’s national evaluation of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program and senior advisor for an evaluation of the effects on student achievement of the California Public School Accountability Act. He served as deputy director of the national evaluation of the Eisenhower Professional Development Program, and he played a leading role in ED’s efforts to improve the use of achievement data from statewide assessment programs in educational evaluations.

Before coming to AIR, Dr. Garet was an assistant professor in the School of Education at Stanford University and an associate professor in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, where he taught courses on research methods and on schools as organizations.
