Managing Director
Larry Condelli, Ph.D., is a Managing Director in the Education Group at AIR in Washington, D.C., and has responsibility for the adult education and literacy area. His work includes research on adult ESL students and training and technical assistance projects for adult educators. He recently directed the What Works Study for Adult ESL Literacy Students, the first large-scale empirical study of adult ESL students in the U.S. The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, was designed to identify effective instructional practices for adult ESL literacy students.
Dr. Condelli also was instrumental in developing the National Reporting System, the national accountability system for the federally funded adult education and literacy program. He currently directs projects to help states implement the system and improve the quality and use of data through training, technical assistance and online training. In this capacity he works closely with federal adult education staff, state directors of adult education, and other leaders in the field.
Dr. Condelli’s other projects include developing a performance-based reading assessment for low-literate adults for the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, funded by the National Center for Educational Statistics. He also provides training and technical assistance to adult education staff in several states and is a staff development and data consultant for the states of Alabama and California. Dr. Condelli holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California.
