Ohio Assessment

DeeAnn Wagner - Managing Director

A picture of DeeAnn Wagner In Ohio, state officials have decided not only to meet, but to exceed the federal No Child Left Behind Act standards. While the federal government requires yearly testing in mathematics and reading for students in grades 3 through 8 for states receiving Title I funds, Ohio wants assessments for all of its 1.2 million public school students in kindergarten through grade 8.

DeeAnn Wagner, a Managing Director at AIR, is leading the development of diagnostic and achievement assessments that align with Ohio’s content standards in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. These assessments will contribute to Ohio’s accountability system, while also helping parents, teachers, and administrators improve instruction. The assessment system includes professional development and informational materials to orient teachers and others to the tests, as well as outreach activities and materials for teachers to use after diagnostic tests have been given.

DeeAnn and the AIR team are developing test specifications in conjunction with committees of Ohio teachers; writing items and scoring procedures for tests. The team is also developing alternate assessments for students with disabilities and for English language learners that will parallel the assessments developed for students in general education classes. Field testing of the tests will be conducted, after which assessments are then refined, and operational test forms are developed. The team will also coordinate all operational and technical aspects of the project, such as printing, distributing, and collecting tests; analyzing test data; and issuing score reports for all students.

In order to familiarize Ohio citizens with the testing program, AIR will develop and distribute outreach and informational materials. In addition, training materials and training programs for Ohio teachers will be created to enable them to administer the tests and use the results to improve their instructional practice.
