AIR Vice President Dr. Kristin Carman to Facilitate Conversations on Patient Engagement at TEDMED 2014
Washington, D.C. – Dr. Kristin L. Carman, an American Institutes for Research (AIR) Vice President in AIR’s Health and Social Development program, will serve as a conversation facilitator at the Great Challenges of Health and Medicine program of the 2014 TEDMED Conference September 10-12, 2014, in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, CA.
Dr. Carman will facilitate conversations on patient engagement in a set of “Hive” discussions called “The Role of the Patient” at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts during the conference. Topics will include empowering patients to make healthier decisions; patients’ perspectives of their roles; and the role of healthy people (non-patients) in healthcare. The six Great Challenges program of the TEDMED 2014 conference convenes a multidisciplinary community in a year-round conversation exploring the complexity of thorny issues that require a deeper understanding to resolve.
The theme of TEDMED 2014 is “Unlocking Imagination in Service of Health and Medicine.” The annual multidisciplinary conference brings together leaders from all sectors of society to explore the promise of technology and potential of human achievement in health and medicine.
Dr. Carman is nationally known for her work in conceptualizing the role of patients and families in health care in using deliberative methods to elicit a deep understanding of issues in health care among diverse stakeholders. She directs AIR’s Center for Patient & Consumer Engagement, where her work developing and evaluating materials for use by consumers, purchasers and health care providers includes a specific emphasis on explaining evidence-based information for use in decision-making. Most recently, Dr. Carman and her AIR colleagues convened a group of national stakeholders for the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation that yielded a national roadmap for patient and family engagement. The Roadmap will be made available to the public later this month.
