Concord, MA
AIR’s New England office is housed in a renovated 19th-century barn located about two miles from the center of historic Concord, Massachusetts.
Our space in the "barn" includes offices, project workspaces, two conference rooms, and two usability testing laboratories.
Each laboratory consists of a pair of rooms, one used for testing and one used for observation, separated by a one-way mirror. Each lab is equipped with two discreetly mounted video cameras that feed images to an editing workstation in the observation room.
We routinely conduct focus groups in the larger of our two laboratories and our conference room.
Our work
Since its establishment in the early 1970s, the New England office’s work has focused on bridging the gap between people and technology. The terms most commonly used to describe our work are human factors engineering, usability engineering, user interface design, information design, and usability testing.
We also consult with government and industry, helping organizations respond to litigation claims arising from disputes in the technology procurement process.
Our history
In the 1970s, the New England staff worked predominantly on the ergonomics of complex radar and communication systems. In the 1980s, we continued to support large system development efforts, but expanded our work to include usability testing and the design of consumer and business products.
Today we work primarily with private sector clients. Most of our projects involve usability testing and hardware, software, or document design.
We also maintain a link to our past work on large systems development efforts. Several staff members work with the military and system development contractors to improve their procurement processes to avoid litigation claims.
