Adolescence marks a time of tremendous opportunity for positive growth and development as young people transition into adulthood. Exclusion, rejection, or bias can make this journey perilous. A disproportionate number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth experience physical and emotional abuse at home, in school, and in their communities simply because of their LGBT identity.
AIR develops knowledge and understanding about LGBT youth that takes account of their experiences and needs. AIR also enhances opportunities for the healthy development, well-being, and safety of LGBT children, youth, and their families by strengthening the systems and programs that address the needs of LGBT youth. We provide training and technical assistance to federal, state, and local agencies in child welfare, behavioral health, education, and juvenile justice to improve policies, services, and care aligned with LGBT youth’s experiences and needs.
The Interagency Working Group on Youth Programs (IWGYP) unveiled a new topic on its website dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. The section includes comprehensive information and resources for organizations and communities that are interested in providing safe and supportive environments for LGBT youth and their families.
AIR's Jeff Poirier and Karen Francis co-authored this practice brief, Providing Services and Supports for Youth Who Are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex or Two-Spirit (LGBTQI2-S), which describes key strategies, policies, and practices for professionals and systems to provide more culturally and linguistically competent care for LGBTQI2-S youth.
The Child, Adolescent and Family Branch (CAFB) of the Center for Mental Health Services initiated the National Workgroup to Address the Needs of Children and Youth Who Are LGBTQI2-S and Their Families to support and enhance services for children and youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, or two-spirit (LGBTQI2-S).
