Adult Learning
AIR’s adult learning work focuses on the needs of adults seeking to enhance their literacy skills, English language learners, and adult students who attend community colleges and other learning environments.
We seek to study and improve instruction and program services for students through research and by providing professional development and technical assistance to state and program staff.
Our team includes former teachers and practitioners, researchers, data analysts, and professional development specialists who have substantial experience in adult literacy, development education, and English language instruction at the local, state and federal levels.

As part of a larger inter-agency effort to develop new federal data on adults’ education, training, and credentials for work, the National Center for Education Statistics and AIR developed and pilot-tested of a set of survey items on industry-recognized certification, state licensure, and educational certificates.

August is Connected Educator Month, an effort by the U.S. Department of Education to encourage teachers and school administrators across the country to participate in online learning communities and networks to enhance their professional development. AIR is supporting the month-long endeavor by coordinating more than 250 events, including online forums, webinars, blog discussions, online chats, podcasts and other interactive options that explore online learning issues.

The First 5 LA Family Literacy Initiative is a comprehensive program to promote language and literacy development, parenting knowledge and skills, and economic self-sufficiency among low-income families in Los Angeles County. Findings from the eight-year evaluation of this Family Literacy Initiative have shown significant growth in language and literacy skills among children participating in these programs.
