Human Factors in the Workplace
Human performance in the workplace is influenced by many things, including the way in which people interact with the systems, tools, machines, and environments of work and everyday life. AIR researchers apply their knowledge of work and human behavior to design workplace systems, procedures, and devices that improve performance, maximizes safety, and reduce risk and error. In addition, we design and evaluate software so that it is consonant with human capabilities, evaluate the causal contributors to human error, evaluate voluntary incident report systems, and conduct process analyses related to the use of aeronautical information.

Job, Skill and Competency Analysis
AIR’s industrial-organizational psychologists routinely work with our clients to define the knowledge, skill, ability, and competency requirements of jobs and occupations. We use this core information to develop performance management systems, identify content for training programs, inform recruitment and selection processes, and support other human resource management (HRM) applications. AIR has analyzed a broad range of jobs, including high-risk professions such as Air Traffic Controller, Deputy US Marshals, Electricians, and Intelligence Officers.

Organizational Assessment
AIR experts assess the needs, processes and functions of organizations with the overall goal of improving organizational outcomes. Our researchers utilize a variety of assessment tools and methods to support this work, including interviews, procedural audits, cognitive labs, focus groups, and surveys. Targeted surveys have been particularly valuable in our assessment of organizational cultures and climates, employee engagement, the state of higher education, and career readiness, to name a few. Our survey researchers have the capability to design content, conduct multiple-mode administrations, analyze data, and organize survey results that yield organizational insight and actionable recommendations for addressing organizational performance issues.

Performance Management
AIR uses surveys, interviews, and other diagnostic techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of organizations across a range of organizational functions and dimensions, such as quality of leadership and interpersonal interactions, culture and climate, communications and decision-making, and work motivation and incentives.
We provide in-depth survey feedback, perform root-cause analysis to determine the reasons for organizational breakdowns, and propose changes or refinements of managerial and human resources policies and behaviors to address problems and to promote effective change. We also perform best practices studies to provide an organization’s management with direction that is based on the previously successful efforts of others.

Team Training
AIR’s team training work focuses on reducing the risk of errors across numerous industries, such as health care, where it is essential that team members be able to maintain their situation awareness, communicate efficiently, and make effective decisions.
AIR staff are developing and evaluating team training for healthcare, aviation, and military workforces including ensuring the national adoption of TeamSTEPPS™ – the federal standard for medical team training programs.

Enhancing our nation’s literacy and numeracy skills is central to maintaining a globally competitive workforce. AIR has extensive experience leading the development of national assessments of basic cognitive and literacy skills, and has been involved in translating those measures into requirements for occupations in the national economy.
