Program Support and Evaluation

AIR’s team of evaluation and workforce experts work with government and private sector clients to develop and improve programs, systems, and processes to optimize organizational performance. We conduct process and impact evaluations, applying our expertise in research design, data collection, and quantitative and qualitative analysis to determine program effectiveness and to identify best practices. Our evaluations provide concrete, actionable recommendations to align and improve programs, systems, and work processes.

AIR and Mathematica Policy Research developed this guide to help you consider evaluation issues likely to arise as you launch ARRA-funded initiatives and other educational reform activities.

  • Public School Practices for Violence Prevention and Reduction: 2003–04

School violence can lead to a disruptive and threatening environment, physical injury, and emotional stress, all of which can be obstacles to student achievement (Elliott, Hamburg, and Williams 1998). Educators have responded to the perceived threat of school violence by implementing programs designed to prevent, deter, and respond to the potential for violence in schools (Peterson, Larson, and Skiba 2001). In addition, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (P.L. 107-110) emphasizes the importance of safe learning environments by requiring schools to have a safety plan in place and to fund programs and practices intended to prevent and reduce violence in schools.

  • Exploring Assignments, Student Work, and Teacher Feedback in Reforming High Schools Report

AIR researchers and leaders at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation began a nationwide study of teaching and learning in foundation-supported schools with a pilot study in Washington State.

AIR’s experts provide support for all aspects of the National Household Education Survey (NHES), a program that provides descriptive data on the educational activities of the U.S. population.

  • Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS)

The Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS), sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), is an integrated sample survey of public and private schools, school districts, principals, teachers, and public school libraries. SASS data, which are collected every four years, inform decision makers and provides researchers with a wealth of relevant data on the nation’s elementary and secondary schools. AIR provides support for all aspects of SASS.
