Workforce Development in Developing Countries
AIR prepares students for success in the labor market by providing them with skills that match the current needs of employers and the economy. We develop training programs that enable students, particularly postsecondary students, to enter a variety of industries that require well-developed technical skills. Additional workforce development efforts have focused on providing skills maintenance and enhancement through continuing education to those already employed, as well as retraining for displaced workers.
United States Ambassador to Georgia John Bass visited the Vocational Education Center (VEC) in Kutaisi on March 18, 2010 to visit the trainees and instructors in the construction trade courses sponsored by the USAID-funded Vocational Education Project in Georgia (VEP).
On May 21, 2008 USAID awarded AIR a contract to implement the Vocational Education Project in Georgia, a two-year workforce development project designed to develop and expand vocational education and training to meet labor market demand in the tourism and construction sectors.
This five-year project aimed to improve the quality and relevance of secondary education for Macedonian youths, to equip them with the skills and knowledge to succeed in a changing social and economic environment, and to provide the Macedonian economy with a more flexible, better-prepared workforce.
The Vocational Education Project (VEP) in Georgia is designed to increase the capacities of Georgia’s construction and tourism sectors through specialized interventions in training and education.
The strategic objective of the Malawi Teacher Training Activity was to improve the quality of primary education by providing professional development opportunities for in-service and pre-service teachers through content-specific and pedagogical training as well as the provision of appropriate teaching and learning materials.
