Our nation's public schools serve more than 6 million students with disabilities. As part of its commitment to improving the lives of these infants, toddlers, children, and youth, AIR offers a wide range of services.
The federal government has supported both special education research and the training of special educators since 1958. Historically, special education law has focused on ensuring that children and youth with disabilities have access to free and appropriate education consistent with their needs. Legislative mandates protect the rights of children and their families and help states and localities educate all children with disabilities.
AIR's services and projects complement the intent of this legislation by ensuring that students with disabilities receive high quality and cost-effective educational services. Our special education professionals:
- Analyze policies that support clients' efforts in program design, legislative and budget issues, national initiatives, and stakeholder inquiries
- Compile and analyze research and empirical data and communicate the results in accessible formats
- Design and conduct longitudinal studies that assess the implementation and impact of policies and programs
- Synthesize research-based information into products and materials to facilitate communication with teachers, administrators, families, and policy makers
- Manage and operate technical assistance centers and task ordering contracts
- Synthesize research and communicate findings associated with technology interventions in educational environments
- Provide technical expertise on effective strategies for linking research to practice
- Evaluate multi-faceted programs to offer clients the foundation for program planning and long-term program management
- Develop useful and timely informational resources that reflect our expertise in substantive, qualitative, and quantitative areas of special education
- Analyze fiscal policy as it relates to special education services
