Our nation's public schools serve more than 6 million students with disabilities. As part of its commitment to improving the lives of these infants, toddlers, children, and youth, AIR offers a wide range of services.
The federal government has supported both special education research and the training of special educators since 1958. Historically, special education law has focused on ensuring that children and youth with disabilities have access to free and appropriate education consistent with their needs. Legislative mandates protect the rights of children and their families and help states and localities educate all children with disabilities.
