Michael S. Garet

Michael S. Garet is a vice president and institute fellow at AIR. His areas of specialization include teacher development and methodological issues in evaluating the impacts of educational interventions. He is currently co-leading two projects for the Institute of Education Sciences: a study of the impact of multi-tiered systems of support in reading, and an evaluation of the implementation and impact of the Comprehensive Literacy State Development program. He is also leading two projects for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: an evaluation of the foundation’s Networks for School Improvement initiative, and a longitudinal study of COVID, equity, and education.

Dr. Garet has led several experimental studies examining the impact of teacher professional development, including studies of 2nd grade reading, 4th grade math, and 7th grade math. He also led a study of the impact of teacher and leader evaluation systems, and he co-led a large-scale evaluation of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Intensive Partnership Sites initiative and a study of Deeper Learning Network schools for the Hewlett Foundation. He was a co-lead of the Center for Alignment, Instruction, Standards, and Learning, supported by the Institute of Education Sciences.

Before joining the staff at AIR, Dr. Garet was an assistant professor in the School of Education at Stanford, and an associate professor in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern, where he taught courses on research methods and on schools as organizations. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Recent publications include work appearing in the Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness, the American Educational Research Journal, and AERA Open.
